“The shrill chirp of sneakers darting across a gymnasium that echoes down the hallway. The smell of freshly waxed floors and old books. The harsh clang of a locker slamming shut, punctuating the silence of an afternoon lull. These sights, sounds, and smells, dredge up feelings of nostalgia and angst for a stage in our lives that was often messy and transformative: High School. This environment transports us to a time when we’re discovering our identity and formulating a belief system.
JV Collective’s studio is located in South Philadelphia's decommissioned Edward Bok Vocational High School. As we walk down the hall to our studio each day we pass the auditorium, long rows of lockers, and empty trophy cases; vestiges of the building’s past life.
In a nod to this loaded locale, we present In-School Suspension. The works of 34 artists from across the globe explore coming of age, formative years, and discovering one's identity. In-School Suspension is a snapshot of the universal experience that transcends regions, states, countries, and generations.”

“Dream Machine is an exhibition dedicated to tender conversations through the fusion of identity and studio practice. We house work that exposes today’s truths, standing together in idea and individuality to form an eclectic show that displays jewelry, object, tableware, and sculpture - uniting to expand the spectrum of this field.”
The show will be held during New York City Jewelry Week 2020, November 16-22.

Handmade Hacking
October 23rd - November 27th
Opening: October 23rd from 6pm-9pm
Baltimore Jewelry Center
10 E North Ave, Suite 130, Baltimore MD 21202
Computer aided technology is no longer new. Over the past several decades, industry professionals and artists alike have explored and expanded digital technology, developing the tools and materials available to create a visual language built in the virtual sphere. In Handmade Hacking we ask what happens when the maker is interested in using the technology not as an end but as a means to push beyond the software? What happens when the artist moves deftly from handmade to digital and back again, blurring the distinctions between the methods of making? How many stages or degrees of separation might exist from design to outcome? This exhibition features the work of Erica Bello, James Betts, Sofia Björkman, Emily Cobb, Jeremy Diamond, Ben Dory, Stefan Gougherty, Lia Huntington, Maria Konschake, Maia Leppo, Florian Milker, Sarah Montagnoli, Annika Pettersson, Darja Popolitova, Gretchen Schreiber, Ellen Sisti, Katja Toporski, Devyn Vasquez, Aric Verrastro, Mallory Weston, Danny Xiu, Yingqi Puffy Zhao, and Gabriel Zwilling.

In-School Suspension
“The shrill chirp of sneakers darting across a gymnasium floor that echoes down the hallway. The smell of freshly waxed floors and old books. The harsh clang of a locker slamming shut, punctuating the silence of an afternoon lull. If you went to public school in North America, these sights, sounds, and smells, should be all too familiar. They dredge up feelings of nostalgia and angst for a stage in our lives that’s often messy and transformative. This environment transports us to a time when we’re discovering our identity and formulating a belief system.
JV Collective is located in the former Edward Bok Vocational High School in South Philadelphia which was decommissioned in 2013. Years later the building has taken on a new life as a space for artists, small businesses, non-profits, and the like. But as we walk to our studio each day we pass by the auditorium, long rows of lockers, and empty trophy cases; vestiges of the buildings past life.
In a nod to this loaded locale, JV Collective is seeking submissions of necklaces and pendants to be suspended in a pop-up exhibition located in the lockers of the Bok hallway. We invite work that explores the theme of coming of age, formative years, and discovering your identity. Whatever your ‘high school’ experience was (or wasn’t) we’re looking for broad interpretations of this concept and these ideas can be explored objectively or abstractly, be narrative and autobiographical or expository and analytical. But most importantly, we’re looking for work that connects with this unique location and exists in conversation with the environment.”
